ABOUT
Hiraeth
[히라에스]
Hiraeth is a Welsh word combining 'Hir,' meaning something that persists from afar, and 'Aeth,' meaning a grief that has passed. It refers to a longing for home — a yearning for a time and place that can never physically be returned to.
HIRAETH PROJECT is an art program selected for the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture's '2026 K-Arts Young Creator Support Program.'
The experience of losing someone dear through death leaves a deep mark on our lives.
The emotions of grief — arriving as trauma and profound sorrow — are often left unacknowledged and unmet, leaving us isolated and alone.
As someone who has lived through such a time,
I deeply empathize with that pain and wish to share it together.
HIRAETH PROJECT is an art project that captures your intimate stories and memories of death, rendering them into a single still life painting.
Drawing inspiration from 17th-century Vanitas still life painting, each person's loss and emotion is expressed in a unique way using traditional East Asian painting materials — ink, gofun, and mineral pigments — on linen cloth.
Completed works and stories are archived on this website under full anonymity. It is our hope that this becomes a space of solidarity — where sorrow once locked away in a room of one's own is confirmed, through the stories of others, to never have been yours alone.
If you wish to participate, please send your story through the SUBMIT page. The project will continue with the publication of an archive book and an offline exhibition.
